PTFE tape is one of those “quiet hero” materials—chemically inert, temperature resistant, low-friction, and electrically excellent. But not all PTFE tapes behave the same in real applications. Two tapes can look identical on a roll and perform very differently once you start wrapping, insulating, die-cutting, or running them through automated equipment.

 

Lately, the demand for tensilized PTFE tape has been increasing, especially as applications in areas such as aerospace, precision electronics, and semi-conductors have seen a surge in recent times. However, with only a few companies capable of making these tapes globally, it does warrant a closer look as to what this enhanced version of PTFE tapes really brings to the table.

What exactly is “skived” PTFE tape?

Skived PTFE tape is produced by first forming a PTFE billet (or thick-walled tube) and then skiving it—think of it as peeling a controlled-thickness film from a rotating PTFE preform. This is a standard, scalable route and is formally covered by specifications such as ASTM D3308 for PTFE resin skived tape.

What is “tensilized” PTFE tape?

Tensilized PTFE tape starts with a skived film but then undergoes a controlled stretching/orientation step that allows for a far higher tensile modulus. This aligns PTFE’s microstructure and changes the balance of properties. In effect, the process allows for a much higher tensile and dielectric strength while lowering the elongation.

By treating the tape in a specific way, the material becomes far harder to stretch (lower elongation) and stronger in the oriented direction (higher tensile / higher modulus), often with better tear propagation resistance in practical handling.

You need strength + dimensional control + electrical performance, especially in production environments where repeatability matters.

Tensilized PTFE tape is almost always priced at a premium over regular skived PTFE tape.

For example, distributors list Saint-Gobain high-modulus PTFE tape products at meaningfully higher price points depending on width/length and construction.

  • If you’re buying on a “spec-driven” basis (dielectric, tensile, thickness uniformity), tensilized often lands ~3X-4X the cost of regular skived—sometimes more for thin gauges, tight tolerances, or niche certifications.

Pick regular skived PTFE tape if your top priority is:

  • Conformability around complex geometry
  • General chemical/temperature resistance
  • Cost-sensitive builds where extreme tensile/dielectric isn’t required

Pick tensilized PTFE tape if your top priority is:

  • High tensile strength and tear resistance during processing
  • Lower elongation for repeatable wraps (especially automated)
  • Higher dielectric performance for demanding insulation duty

While both materials share PTFE’s core chemical and thermal advantages, tensilized PTFE tape is a performance-engineered product, not just a variation of skived film.
